8 Paint Colors to Sell Your Home Faster (and Why They Work)

Selling your home faster is all about maximizing your curb appeal and optimizing your price.

But what are the eight paint colors you should select to sell your home faster? Why do these particular colors work better than others for exteriors and/or interiors? And what colors should you absolutely avoid when you think about selling your home?

The answers can all be found in this article. The right colors are inviting, calming, relaxing, and typically “warm” in tone.

This month, our colorist shares the 8 colors that she has found sell homes faster.

1) Off-White is Safe and Steady

A neutral off-white tone is a great choice to appeal to most home buyers. You just can’t go wrong with an off-white exterior.

Of course, don’t make the exterior all off-white. Choose a dark color as a contrast for your windowsills, shutters, trim, even the front door, and think about doing the same to the interior.

2) White is Always All Right

A white exterior can be beautiful, simple, and very inviting, like a white farmhouse, a beach house, or an urban home. White is just a clean choice. Period.

Think of the house you grew up in or houses where you have lived. Were any of them white? Does that color bring back strong emotions? It should, because it’s one of the most common colors used to sell houses.

3) Gray Can Definitely Be OK

Gray is a great choice for many people because it’s not white, eggshell, or off-white.

Hundreds of our clients have requested gray after we’ve shown them examples of our home exterior projects that resulted in multiple offers for a home.

4)Blue Gray is True Blue

Blue gray is a great contrast color and adds a bit more color than gray itself.

Blue gray can complement white or off-white trim to add drama to your curb appeal.

5) Yellow is Mellow

Yellow is known to evoke emotions of optimism and youthfulness.

It’s especially important to grab attention of window shoppers, but you should wisely choose a mellow shade of yellow… not a shade that is too bright.

6) Light Blue Offers Excitement

Warm colors like light blue can increase excitement, energy, and perhaps your sales price.

Light blue can create a sensation of trust and security, which is what owning a home is all about.

7) Putty is the Right Skin Tone

Not exactly white and not exactly gray, putty can blend in with your home’s neighborhood, especially if your lot or street has lots of trees.

Putty can be just the right tone to select if you’re tired of the white exterior that you’ve had for years or even decades.

8) Taupe Can Be Tops

Finally, taupe is a wonderful color that offers a natural look.

Taupe is one of our most popular colors to increase the appeal of your home.

What Colors Should You Absolutely Avoid at Any Cost?

As I’ve said above, warm colors work. Dark colors don’t. In fact, the latter can be a real turn-off, not to mention potentially scaring away potential buyers during an Open House or a neighborhood drive-by.

So I highly recommend not using black, brown, purple, orange, or any ultra-bright colors like fluorescent orange or hot pink to sell your home, despite what your decorator, partner, friend or neighbor may recommend.
